RESISTANCE PREVENTION
Risk of resistance? YES, resistance to tetrahydropyrimidines has been reported for Haemonchus spp, Ostertagia spp and Trichostrongylus spp worms in sheep and goats, for Haemonchus spp in cattle, probably with cross-resistance to levamisole. However, resistance of gastrointestinal roundworms to tetrahydropyrimidines is usually less frequent than resistance to benzimidazoles, levamisole or macrocyclic lactones.
This means that if this product does not achieve the expected efficacy against the mentioned parasites, it can be due to resistance and not to incorrect use, which is usually the most frequent cause of product failure.
Alternative chemical classes/active ingredients to prevent resistance of external parasites through product rotation:
- Benzimidazoles (e.g. albendazole, fenbendazole, oxfendazole). Resistance probems to benzimidazoles are worse and more frequent than resistance to tetrahydropyrimidines.
- Derquantel: available so far only in combination with abamectin in some countries (e.g. Australia, UK & EU, New Zealand).
- Macrocyclic lactones (e.g. abamectin, doramectin, eprinomectin, ivermectin, moxidectin, etc.). Resistance to macrocyclic lactones is also increasing and strengthening quickly in many countries.
- Levamisole. Resistance to levamisole has been reported in most countries, but is usually less strong and frequent than to benzimidazoles.
- Monepantel: only against gastrointestinal roundworm species in sheep & goats in some countries (e.g. Australia, UK & EU, New Zealand). First cases of resistance reported in New Zealand in 2013 and in Australia in 2016.
- Salicylanilides (e.g. closantel): only in some countries against certain gastrointestinal roundworm species. Resistance to closantel has been reported in some countries.
- Nitroxinil: only against a few gastrointestinal roundworms (e.g. Bunostomum spp, Haemonchus spp, Oesophagostomum spp). Not available in some countries.
These alternative products may not be available in all countries, or may not be effective against all the concerned parasites.
It is highly recommended to periodically check the resistance status of each property performing appropriate tests (e.g. fecal egg counts) under supervision of a veterinary doctor. Such tests are now routinely available for most producers in developed countries.

MARKETING
Are the active ingredients of this product ORIGINAL* or GENERICS**?
- GENERICS
*Meaning that they are still patent protected and generics are not yet available
**Meaning that they have lost patent protection and may be acquired from manufacturers of generic active ingredients other than the holder of the original patent.
COUNTRIES where this brand/product is marketed: USA.
GENERIC BRANDS available? Yes, but rather few in most countries. This product itself contains generic morantel tartrate.

COMMENTS
GOAT CARE 2X is a brand from DURVET for a medicated wormer containing morantel tartrate.
Morantel (in this case the tartrate salt) is a veteran anthelmintic introduced in the 1970s (by PFIZER → ZOETIS). It is a narrow-spectrum anthelmintic effective against adult roundworms in the gut, but not against those in other organs (skin, lungs, etc). Nowadays it is rather scarcely used in horses, ruminants or pets because more effective compounds with a broader spectrum are usually preferred. It is not used in agriculture.
Morantel has no residual effect, i.e. it kills the parasites after administration but as soon as medicated feeding is interrupted it does not significantly protect the animals against re-infestation by infective stages in their environment.
